Pilgrimage of the Sea Services @ The National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton | Emmitsburg | Maryland | United States

The National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton will welcome visitors on October 4 for its annual Pilgrimage for the Sea Services. Members of the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and The United States Public Health Service along with family members and friends are invited gather at the Basilica and celebrate a special mass at 3 p.m.

This event is held each year to honor Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton as Patroness of the Sea Services and ask for her intercession for all the men and women serving in our nation’s Sea Services, and is the only event of its kind in the United States.  Each year, the Sea Services Pilgrimage draws hundreds of visitors to the Shrine for a Mass and dinner reception.

“This year we are honored to have Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio celebrate Mass,” said Rob Judge, executive director of The National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Archbishop Broglio oversees the diocese of Military Services, which supports and provides spiritual enrichment for those serving for our country. “It is an honor to have Admiral William Fallon, U.S. Navy (Retired) chair the Sea Services committee each year,” said Judge. “We are blessed to have Admiral Fallon leading a renewed effort with the committee, who is instrumental in coordinating the annual event, in spreading devotion to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton as the Patroness of the Sea Services.”

Stained Glass Sunday @ The National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton
2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

On Sunday, November 8 and Sunday, November 15 at 2:30 p.m., the Shrine will celebrate and discuss the stained glass art that is in the Basilica of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Participants will discover the history behind the stained glass windows in the Basilica, and create their own stained glass art to take home.

“What a beautiful way to spend an afternoon before the hustle and bustle of the holidays,” said Bridgett Bassler, Program Coordinator.  “Guests can create their own masterpiece to be given as a gift during the holiday season all while learning about the history of the Basilica’s stained glass.”

The Basilica of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, completed in 1965, originally served as the chapel for the Daughters of Charity. After Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s canonization, the chapel was dedicated as the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Chapel in 1976. In 1991, Pope John Paul II designated it a minor basilica. The Basilica houses many beautiful stained glass windows. The upper stained glass windows represent various saints who have a special relevance to the Daughters of Charity and their missions and ministries, including Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Patrick, Saint Catherine Laboure, Saint Genevieve, Saint Louise de Marillac, and many others. There are also stained glass windows that represent the seven corporal words of mercy and these windows feature the Sisters wearing traditional white cornettes and habits. Guests at the Stained Glass Sunday event will learn more about these and other windows at the Basilica before making their own stained glass piece.

Stained glass artist Linn Wichowski from Wentz Stained Glass Studio will instruct attendees on making their piece. Attendees can design their own six inch glass mosaic window catcher or create one from provided ideas. There is a $10 fee per person to assist with material costs.
